Poker is a family of card games which combines gambling, strategy, and ability. All poker variants involve betting as an intrinsic part of play, and decide the winner of each hand according to the combinations of players' cards, at least some of which stay hidden until the end of the hand. Poker games differ in the number of cards dealt, the number of shared or "community" cards, the number of cards which stay hidden, and the betting procedures.

In the majority of modern poker games, the initial round of betting begins with one or more of those players making some form of a forced bet (the blind or ante). In standard poker, each player bets according to the rank they believe their hand is worth when compared with the other players. The action then proceeds clockwise as every player in turn should either match (or even "call") the maximum previous bet, or fold, so losing the sum bet so much and additional participation in the hand. A player who suits with a wager could also "increase" (increase) the bet. The betting round ends when all players have either called the last bet or folded. If all but one participant hangs on any round, the remaining player accumulates the pot without needing to show their hands. If more than one player stays in contention after the final betting round, a showdown takes place in which the hands are shown, along with the player with the winning hand takes the pot.

With the exception of first forced bets, money is only placed into the pot voluntarily with a participant who either believes the wager has positive expected value or who is trying to bluff other players for various strategic reasons. Thus, while the outcome of any particular hand significantly involves chance, the long-run expectations of these players are decided by their actions chosen on the basis of probability, psychology, and game theory.

Poker has grown in popularity since the start of the 20th century and has gone from being mostly a recreational activity confined to small groups of fans to a widely popular activity, both for participants and spectators, such as online, with many professional players and multimillion-dollar tournament prizes.
